Ox Creek: Progress Update

Ox Creek meanders through a state-regulated freshwater wetland just South of Fulton, New York; the DEC of New York has mapped its watershed (see DEC Environmental Navigator interactive map at http://www.dec.ny.gov/imsmaps/) as home to a variety of rare plants and animals. The EOOC team visited Ox Creek via County Route 14, immediately South of King Road, for the purpose of taking photographs and video of the area.

We are currently in the process of preparing an application for 501(c)(3) status as a non-profit unincorporated association. We have discovered a variety of related projects in New York State, and have learned much about governmental involvement in ecological stewardship. For example, we have at our disposal a means of submitting data from the field: the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (http://www.nynhp.org/) provides a relatively simple form with which anyone can add to the DEC’s mammoth database. Furthermore, the DEC of New York has published a draft of an encyclopedic survey entitled, “Ecological Communities of New York State” (http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/intro_TOC.pdf), which I am sure we will find invaluable. And furthermore, I discovered NAAMP, the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program, to which I hope to contribute useful multimedia clips gathered at Ox Creek.

In a few short weeks, our energies seem to have greater focus and tremendous scientific and educational potential. Our immediate objectives are, at present, a) complete the organization and publication of our collected multimedia – preferably around a central summary document at cnx.org, and b) find initial sponsorship (to the tune of $300) to pay for our application to the IRS. If approved for exempt status, it seems as though we will be poised to seek greater sponsorship and thereby augment the scope of our future expeditions.

Oswego River Panorama

River looks curved because I’m turning from left to right. The cement path on the left was close to the water’s surface and looked dry but was very slippery with gunk and my sneakers were crummy. Almost took a dip. I’ve always wanted to come down here though. With a boat, or some better shoes, I can climb the rocks in the falls here and onto the land and go further down to the little island.Oswego River Panorama

Underwater Video

Went back to Ox Creek today, this time with Ben and Mary. Had a funny idea for a way to get a (relatively) clear view of the the creek from just beneath the surface: send a $12 fish tank out like a little boat and have a camera running inside it, up against one side of the glass.

The video was sometimes dark – as it was still a little grey and windy out there this morning. But some of what I captured came out great, I think. Here’s a sample clip:

And while I have yet to fully update my report + multimedia package at cnx.org, I can assure you: there is more to come. I was thinking that this would be my last trek to this particular site, but I’ve changed my mind. We saw Canadian geese, Great Blue Herons, and Red-Winged Blackbirds today. And Ben and I have begun to contemplate kayaks… I sure hope the folks at Canon USA are still watching. We need digital telephoto SLRs.

The Great Escape

Frog at Ox Creek, originally uploaded by bertjerred.

This curious frog jumped out of the water and toward my digital recording box. Thankfully, I had a camera ready. See his great escape below.

Listen to the Sounds of Ox Creek

One of my favorite ways to bring you local species is to bring you the sounds of Ox Creek. I recorded several sample clips this morning; you can preview or download them for free here.

Ox Creek, First Visit

Our first visit was a great success. We are currently processing our video and configuring preliminary distribution channels. To preview our findings, we have made a zipped folder of free photographs available for download here.
